ether sulphate or SLES is primarily used in cosmetics as a detergent. It is
also used to make products bubble and foam. It has wider use in soaps,
shampoos, shower gels and facial cleansers.
Many regulatory
bodies in different countries have considered SLES to be safe to use. However, SLES, though it has been rated as
safe for use, has been identified as a skin irritant if left on skin for a long
period of time.
SLS has been found
to be effective when it comes to removing dirt and oil from hair since it
carries the ability to strip away excess moisture and leave the hair unhealthy.
SLES also tends to make scalp dry and that causes irritation. While cleansing
with SLES, there is chance that it can also damage the hair, make it brittle,
and increase frizz.
Unlike SLS, SLES
will not be able to cause much damage to the skin or strip it of any excess
moisture. All the skincare products that contain SLES are similar in
effectiveness such as cleansing, foaming and emulsifying just as SLS does but
SLES will help the skin after use by leaving it feeling silky soft, smooth and
nourished.
Like many other
detergents, SLES causes irritation on skin and eyes. Hence, it is always
advisable not to apply this chemical on skin for a long time or take it near
the eyes. It can be unhealthy for lungs as well if used for long time.

Sodium laurylether sulphate (SLES) is also called sodium alkyl ether sulfate. This is an
anionic detergent and surfactant found in many personal care products such as
toothpaste, soaps, and shampoos for industrial uses. SLES is known for its
inexpensive price and highly effective foaming agent. In industrial setting,
SLES is manufactured by ethoxylation of dodecyl alcohol, which, in turn, is
produced for commercial purpose from coconut oil and palm kernel oil. This way
ethoxylate is prepared, which is then converted to a sulphuric acid and
neutralized through the transformation into sodium salt.
Hence, the
surfactant sodium lauryl sulphate or sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) is
manufactured. The process of changing SLES through ethoxylation makes it safe
to use in bath and body care products, and in comparison to SLS, this chemical
is gentler on skin.
Properties:
In industrial
applicability, SLES acts as an anionic surfactant that is commonly used as
rinsing agent or as a primary surfactant. This chemical possesses an excellent
detergency or cleansing power in addition to its emulsification and foamability
powers. As a major component of rinse-off products, SLES is compatible with all
surfactants except cationic. In its composition, SELS is manufactured in 28%
and 70% active concentration. However, for exports purpose, 70% active
concentration is most preferred by clients.

popular washing cosmetics was Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS), which has been
replaced by its ethoxylated derivative called Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate

and research groups this chemical continues to be preferred by manufacturers of
household products. This is because SLES is cheap and it performs well since it
