Treatments & Functions

Anti parasitic

Treatments: Liver Fluke Infections (Fascioliasis): Nitroxynil is most commonly used to treat infections caused by liver flukes, specifically Fasciola hepatica. These parasites infect the liver of livestock, causing damage and leading to symptoms like weight loss, anemia, and poor growth. Nitroxynil is effective in eliminating both adult and immature flukes. It is often used in cattle, sheep, and goats. Dosing and Administration: Nitroxynil is usually administered either through subcutaneous injection (under the skin) or topically in the form of a pour-on solution. The dosage depends on the animal's weight and the severity of the infection. Withdrawal period: Livestock treated with Nitroxynil must be monitored for a withdrawal period before being sent for slaughter to ensure that no residues of the drug remain in their meat or milk. Effectiveness: Nitroxynil is very effective, especially when used early in an infection. However, it s important that it is used according to the recommended guidelines to avoid resistance development or toxicity. Function (How Nitroxynil Works): Mechanism of Action: Nitroxynil works by disrupting the parasite's energy production. Specifically, it interferes with the electron transport chain in the mitochondria of the fluke cells, which is essential for the parasite s energy metabolism. This leads to a build-up of toxic metabolic products within the parasite, causing its death. Nitroxynil also has a damaging effect on the parasite's outer surface (tegument), which contributes to its elimination from the host. Toxicity to Parasites: It is selectively toxic to flukes, having minimal toxicity to the host (the livestock), which makes it a useful treatment option. Side Effects and Considerations: While Nitroxynil is generally safe when used as directed, misuse or overuse can lead to toxicity, including symptoms such as lethargy, loss of appetite, or digestive issues in the animal. Some animals may experience local reactions at the injection site or irritation with topical treatments. Resistance can occur if Nitroxynil is overused or not applied correctly, so it s important to rotate between different anti-parasitic treatments.
