Drilling detergent is an aqueous mixture of surface-active chemicals that lowers the surface tension of all water-based drilling fluids while also reducing the likelihood of water-sensitive shale cuttings adhering together. Physical attractiveness is important. A surfactant-type mud additive designed to keep formation shales and clays from clinging to the drilling assembly, as well as gumbo shale from clumping and blocking the annulus and flow lines.
