The apparatus consists of a long glass tube of uniform bore closed at one end, the other end of which is connected by means of a thick walled rubber tubing to a similar glass tube open at both ends. The tube is unusually fixed while the tube can slide along a vertical scale and can be fixed at desired height. A certain volume of air is enclosed in the tube by pouring clean and dry mercury in the tube and the rubber tubing. The position of mercury level in both the tubes can be read on the meter scale marked millimeters and centimeters on both sides. As the tube is of uniform bore the volume of enclosed gas or air may be taken proportional to the length of the tube containing air or gas.

Verification of Law: Level the apparatus and note down the reading of the top of the closed tube on the scale. Adjust the position of the other tube so that the level of mercury in the tubes is the same. The gas enclosed in the closed tube is at atmospheric pressure. Note the reading of mercury level in the top of the closed tube. The difference between these two readings is equal to the volume of the gas enclosed in terms of the length of the tube.
