The Centrifugal barrel Finishing Machine comprises a number of drums mounted on the periphery of a turret. The turret rotates at a high speed in one direction while the drums rotate at a slower speed in opposite direction. Drums are loaded in a manner similar to that for normal tumbling drum; that is with parts, media, water and some form of compounds (Chemical). Rotation of the turret generates high centrifugal force which compacts the load of parts and media into a tight mass, the load having effective weight of as much as 50 times normal gravitational weight. Rotation of the drums in opposite direction to turret rotation cases an activity of the abrasive media sliding against the parts removing burrs and refining the surfaces.

The abrading action (Above fig.) under high centrifugal force, results in very short process time. A product that is lightly rubbed by an abrasive is not much affected, but the same abrasive when rubbed against components with pressure increased by 50 times will have far greater effect. Further, the increase of pressure permits finer abrasive to be used to get far more uniform action over all corners, edges and surfaces as well as achieving finer finishes.

Substantially reduced process cycle is achieved in centrifugal barrels, typically between five and ten minutes compared with one to four hours in vibratory machines and eight to twelve hours in normal tumbling drums.
