Specifications:This Indian standard was adopted by the Indian standards institution on 1 October 1981, after the draft finalized by the Liquid and Gaseous Dielectrics Sectional Committee had been approved by the Electro technical Division Council. This standard is intended for the electrical grade castor oil, used in medium voltage power capacitors and high voltage energy storage capacitors. Castor oil complying with the requirements of this standard is being examined at present. Since this grade of castor oil has the best attainable electrical properties, it may find use as a plasticizer for electrical grade synthetic resin, like Vinyl resins.Requirements of castor oil other than electric grade have been laid down in IS : 435- 1973.ScopeThis standard covers the requirements and methods of test for electrical grade castor oil used in medium voltage power capacitors and high voltage energy storage capacitorsRequirementThe oil shall be the genuine cold drawn, refined and properly processed product of castor seed (Ricinus Communis Linn). It shall be free from admixtures with other oils or substances and also free from sediment and suspended matter. The oil shall be practically odorless. However, a mild odour characteristic of castor oils shall be acceptable. @page { margin: 0.79in } p { margin-bottom: 0.1in; line-height: 120% } Property Value Test method, In accordance with Appearance Clear, Light yellow, Viscous liquid, Free from suspended matter A representative sample of the oil shall be examined in a 100 mm thick layer at ambient temperature Specific Gravity CI 11 of IS : 548 (Part I) - 1964 a.) at 30C/30C 0.954-0.60 0.920 0.926 b.) at 90C/30C 0.920 - 0.926 Kinematic Viscosity, cSt 1.4770 -1.4810 IS : 1448 (P:25) - 1976 a.) at 27C 510 550 b.) at 90C Under Consideration Refractive Index at 27 C 1.4770-14810 CI 10 of IS: 548 (Part I)- 1964 Coefficient of Thermal, per deg C expansion (Volumetric) 0.00070 Appendix A Pour Point C, Maximum -15 IS: 1448 (P:10)- 1970 Flash Point, C, Minimum 275 IS: 1448 (P:21)-1970 Burn Point, C Minimum 290 Appendix B Total Volatile Matter, Percent, Maximum 0.1 CI 5 of IS: 548 (Part I)- 1964 Acid Value, mg KOH per gm of oil, Maximum 0.80 CI 7 of IS: 548 (Part I)- 1964 Saponification value, KOH per gm of oil 177-185 CI 15 of IS: 548 (Part I)- 1964 Iodine Value, g of l2 absorbed in 100 gm 82 90 CI 14 of IS: 548 (Part I)- 1964 Acetyl Value, mg KOH per gm of acetylated oil, minimum 143 CI 16 IS : 548 (Part I) - 1964 Peroxide Value, Milliequivalent per thousand gm.
