India is rich in many minerals such as Iron Ore, Limestone, Coal, Manganese, bauxite, etc. Which are produced in large volumes and are used in Iron and Steel, Cement, Powder, Aluminium and other such Heavy core industries.
There are many lesser known minerals which are found in pockets in India and Siliceous Earth is one of them, Silious Earth is a name given to a siliceous mineral which is white to off-white to pale yellow in color and has similarity with Diatomite or Diatomaceous Earth in Character.
The main component of this mineral is Silica (as SiO2) which consists of approximately 80% and above. Other associated elements are Alumina (as Al2O3) approximately 3 to 10% and traces of various other minerals.
In India, Siliceous Earth is found only in Rajasthan and there also only in two districts - Barmer and Jaisalmer which are next to each other. Both the districts of Rajasthan are complete desert and geologically speaking, formed ocean bed before the sea shifted southwards via today's Rann of Kutch millions of years ago. The siliceous earth deposits of Bariyada area are the largest and most prominent.
A geological map showing the Siliceous Earth deposits is given in the page titled Geological History of Siliceous Earth deposits.
In Bariyada area, the largest mining leases were held by Jaipur Magmatics P. Ltd. (earlier known as Jaipur Cement P. Ltd.) since 1986 for about two decades which covered an area of above 700 hectares (7 square kilometers).
Siliceous Earth is used in powder form which may vary from 80 mesh to 500 mesh powder. It is also used in granule form in some specific operations. Due to its similarity in nature with DIATOMACEOUS EARTH or Diatomite, the siliceous earth has wide uses similar to Diatomite. It is used in paint, filler, rubber, catalyst, fertilizer, pesticides, agriculture and many other industries.
It is a good carrier of pesticides, fertilizers, micronutrients.
It can be used as light filler in certain types of paints.
It can be used as special filler in rubber.
