In a softener system most of the scale forming minerals are exchanged with sodium (common salt) Further  chemical  treatment is given for pH correction, corrosion prevention, algae control, oxygen scavanging etc. Tons of saltwater (Brine)  being  used in softeners is drained off causing lot of damage to the ecology of nature and wastage of water.
