The burn time of gel candles is more than twice as long as that of wax candles, and they give out a much warmer light. However, just like paraffin candles, gel candles produce harmful pollutants when burned since they are constructed from petroleum-based wax or synthetic hydrocarbons. Candle aroma oils used in gel candles are different from those used in wax candles. All fragrance oils used in gel candles must be designed specifically for this use. If this safety measure is disregarded, the candle may develop flammable "scent pockets." Cloudy-looking gel candles should be avoided, and gel candles in general should never be left burning unattended. Unfortunately, gel candles have been linked to multiple fires.
