Fabric choice accounts for the distinction between water-resistant and waterproof. A water-resistant material has such a dense weave that water has a difficult time penetrating it. Therefore due to their composition synthetics like polyester and nylon can better tolerate water than cotton. However there is a limit to how much rain can pass through water-resistant clothing.
