Q. What are louvers?

Answer

A louver, often called Louvre, is an arrangement of wood, slips of glass, laths, slats, horizontal, parallel blades, or other material that is used to manage the flow of air or the amount of light that enters a space. It is common practice to install louvers in windows and doors so that fresh air and light may enter the space while protecting the inside from direct sunlight and rain. They may either be mobile or fixed in their position. The term "louver" was first used to refer to a turret or dome-like lantern that was installed on the roofs of medieval European buildings for ventilation purposes. The arrangement of boards that is now known as a "louver" was one of the ways that the apertures of this turret could be closed against the elements. Some ventilation and air conditioning systems continue to employ louvers in their original function as a covering for the intake and exhaust system.
