Dana Gabriel Fahrenheit, an Amsterdam-based scientist, devised the mercury-in-glass or mercury thermometer in the 1830s (1714). A mercury-filled bulb is secured to a thin glass tube, with the tube holding a significantly less volume of mercury than the bulb.
